Doctors Network: 46 deaths from malnutrition in Sudan’s South Kordofan state

In the last two months, at least 46 people, mostly women and children, have died from malnutrition in Sudan’s South Kordofan state, Anadolu Agency reported citing Sudan’s Doctors Network. The network has stated that more than 19,000 pregnant and breastfeeding women in the region are in urgent need of supplementary nutrition.

The Doctors Network has condemned the use of starvation as a weapon of war and has called on authorities and international humanitarian agencies to intervene immediately. The ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has made it difficult to deliver food and medicine to civilians, leading to the dire humanitarian situation in cities like Kadugli and Dalanj. The network has accused the RSF of maintaining a siege on civilians, preventing aid from reaching them.

The war, which erupted in April 2023, has killed more than 20,000 people and displaced over 14 million, according to the UN and local authorities. Independent research from US universities, however, estimates the death toll at around 130,000.
