UN and Nigeria Warn 400,000 Children at Risk from Malnutrition Crisis
……………….
The Nigerian government and the United Nations have sounded the alarm over a worsening food security and malnutrition crisis, warning that the lives of nearly 400,000 children are at risk without urgent intervention.
The joint statement, issued by Nigeria’s Minister of Humanitarian Affairs Yusuf Tanko Sununu and UN Humanitarian Coordinator Mohamed Fall on World Humanitarian Day (August 19), highlighted the severe funding shortfall facing relief operations. The decline in international financial support, they warned, is hampering life-saving assistance as humanitarian needs continue to grow.
According to the statement, over 31 million Nigerians currently face food insecurity, while more than 10 million children under five suffer from acute malnutrition. Of these, 3.5 million are in severe condition.
Both parties stressed that the deteriorating situation could escalate into a full-scale humanitarian disaster unless the international community mobilizes quickly with increased funding and stronger support for aid workers on the ground.
