The Syrian Commission on the Disappeared has released a new report estimating that the number of people who have disappeared during the rule of the Assad family, from 1970 to 2024, may exceed 300,000. According to a report by the Shia Waves Agency, citing BBC, this report covers the periods of Hafez al-Assad’s and Bashar al-Assad’s rule.

Based on the commission’s findings, widespread suppression of protesters intensified with the beginning of public demonstrations in 2020, leading to the disappearance of tens of thousands of people. The commission also confirmed the existence of over 63 mass graves across Syria, highlighting the extensive scale of human rights violations and humanitarian tragedies in the country.
