WhatsApp Removes 6.8 Million Scam-Linked Accounts in Global Crackdown
…………………..
WhatsApp has disabled 6.8 million accounts linked to criminal scam operations worldwide during the first half of 2025, ABC News reported. The action is part of Meta’s broader efforts to combat increasingly sophisticated online scams targeting users across multiple platforms.
Meta announced new safety features for WhatsApp, including alerts when unknown contacts add users to groups and prompts encouraging users to pause before responding to suspicious messages.
The company highlighted that many scams originate from organized crime-run centers, which use various channels—from messaging apps to social media—to evade detection and defraud victims.
Recent scam campaigns disrupted by Meta involved fraudulent offers for fake social media engagement, pyramid schemes, and cryptocurrency investments, with some linked to a criminal group based in Cambodia.
Meta collaborated with OpenAI to identify and halt these campaigns, demonstrating growing partnerships to address online fraud across digital ecosystems.
