Demis Hassabis Predicts AI to be 10 Times Bigger and Faster Than Industrial Revolution
——————————
In a recent interview published on the Guardian, Demis Hassabis, the head of Google’s DeepMind, stated that artificial intelligence (AI) will be a technological revolution that is ten times bigger and ten times faster than the Industrial Revolution. Hassabis, a self-described “cautious optimist,” believes this will lead to an era of “radical abundance.”
Hassabis, who won a Nobel Prize in chemistry for the AlphaFold breakthrough in protein structure prediction, acknowledged the potential for both positive and negative outcomes. He addressed concerns about misinformation, job displacement, and energy consumption, but suggested that AI’s benefits in solving major issues like climate change will ultimately outweigh these costs.
He also predicted that an artificial general intelligence (AGI), which matches human cognitive capabilities, could be achieved within the next five to ten years. Hassabis believes that society will need to adapt to a new future of work and meaning as many jobs become automated.
