UN Condemns Renewed Violence in DR Congo’s Ituri Province Amid Funding Challenges
————————————-
The United Nations has condemned escalating violence in the Ituri Province of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where armed groups, including the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), have killed at least 82 civilians in Ituri and neighboring North Kivu, Africanews reported. Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, expressed deep concern over the attacks and emphasized efforts by the UN peacekeeping mission MONUSCO to work with Congolese authorities and local communities to de-escalate tensions, protect civilians, and support stabilization.

The violence, particularly in Djugu Territory, has prompted calls for enhanced dialogue to prevent further bloodshed. However, MONUSCO’s capacity to respond effectively is hindered by significant funding shortages. These financial constraints have been worsened by the U.S. government’s reduction of support for UN peacekeeping missions, following the Trump administration’s withdrawal of substantial funding.

Humanitarian organizations in the region face increasing difficulties delivering essential aid due to insecurity and limited resources. Analysts warn that without renewed international financial support, the cycle of violence in eastern DRC risks intensifying, endangering more civilians.

The UN continues to urge the global community for increased solidarity and funding to overcome these challenges and promote lasting peace in the troubled region.
