Severe rainfall has led to the deaths of four people and prompted the evacuation of more than 13,00 residents across South Korea, officials confirmed on Thursday. The Ministry of the Interior and Safety reported that the South Chungcheong region, located south of Seoul, experienced over 400 millimetres of rain since Wednesday, marking record-breaking precipitation in the area.

The Korea Meteorological Administration warned that more heavy rain was expected Thursday night. Authorities issued the highest-level landslide alerts for several regions, including Chungcheong, due to the continued risk from saturated soil, according to the Korea Forest Service.

In Gwangju, sudden torrential downpours resulted in severe flooding, submerging 87 roads and 38 buildings within just two hours, as reported by Yonhap News Agency. The extreme weather also disrupted education services.

The Ministry of Education announced that 403 schools had been closed, and 166 reported damage to their facilities due to the rainfall. Emergency services remain on high alert as weather agencies forecast further rain, raising concerns about additional flooding and landslides in already-affected areas.
