Nearly 800 Killed at Gaza Food Hubs and Aid Routes Since May, UN Reports
——————————–
The UN human rights office reported that at least 798 people have been killed seeking food at distribution points run by the US- and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) and other aid convoys since late May, The Guardian reported. Of these, 615 deaths occurred near GHF sites, which have faced widespread condemnation for compromising humanitarian impartiality and possible complicity in war crimes.
The GHF, backed by Israel as an alternative to the UN aid system, employs armed personnel overseeing just four food distribution zones, compared to 400 non-militarized UN-run zones previously. The GHF denies responsibility for the killings, blaming Israeli troops firing on Palestinians near their hubs.
Meanwhile, Gaza faces a sharp rise in acute malnutrition, with Médecins Sans Frontières reporting a near quadrupling of cases in two months. Recent Israeli airstrikes killed at least 25 Palestinians, including at a school shelter. Hospitals are overwhelmed, with shortages of supplies and power.
Amid ongoing heavy fighting and stalled ceasefire talks, displaced families endure destroyed homes and worsening conditions. The war, ongoing since October 2023, has killed over 57,000 people. Many in Gaza express despair as hopes for peace fade.
