Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit called for intensified action against Islamophobia during the International Conference on Combating Hatred against Islam, held in Cairo on Tuesday. Speaking at the event, Aboul Gheit described Islamophobia as a growing threat to coexistence and mutual respect, according to the Kuwait News Agency.

He attributed its spread to incitement, misrepresentation of Islamic teachings, and the wrongful link between Islam and terrorism. He also criticized biased media portrayals that amplify isolated incidents and reinforce negative stereotypes, saying such coverage fuels extremist rhetoric and deepens social divides.

Aboul Gheit emphasized the responsibility of traditional and digital media to promote tolerance and diversity, and he called for a joint response from governments, international bodies, and civil society groups.

The conference gathered representatives from the Arab League, the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, Al-Azhar, Christian organizations, and several Arab countries to develop strategies for dialogue and peaceful coexistence.
