Sudan: Over 500 Dengue Fever Cases Reported in North Darfur Amid Displacement Crisis

More than 500 cases of dengue fever have been reported in the Tawila area of North Darfur, western Sudan, as continued conflict and mass displacement worsen an already critical humanitarian and healthcare situation.

Ongoing attacks attributed to the Rapid Support Forces have driven large numbers of civilians toward Tawila, where displaced families face overcrowded conditions, limited healthcare services and shortages of essential supplies. The influx has heightened concerns about the spread of infectious diseases.

In response, the General Coordination for Displaced Persons and Refugees has issued an urgent appeal to international organizations, humanitarian agencies and local authorities to intervene, provide medical supplies and strengthen healthcare services to contain the outbreak.

Dengue fever is a viral disease transmitted through the bites of infected mosquitoes. Although many patients recover with appropriate care, some cases can develop into severe illness, making early medical attention and mosquito-control measures essential.

The outbreak comes as Sudan’s prolonged armed conflict continues to trigger widespread displacement and disrupt basic services across Darfur. Humanitarian representatives warn that the situation in Tawila could deteriorate further without an urgent response to the outbreak and increased assistance for displaced and conflict-affected families.
