A fire that broke out late Sunday in a five-story apartment block in Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City has killed eight people, including two children, local authorities confirmed on Monday.

All victims died from smoke inhalation after the blaze started on the building’s ground floor. Residents tried to extinguish the flames themselves before emergency services arrived, while some people jumped from higher floors to escape.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Vietnam has faced a series of deadly fires in recent years, leading to arrests and prosecutions over safety violations and suspected arson.
