Zohran Mamdani, a 33-year-old state assembly member and democratic socialist, has been subjected to a wave of Islamophobic attacks after winning the Democratic primary for New York City mayor, The Guardian reported. If elected, Mamdani would become the city’s first Muslim mayor. Since his primary success, he has faced death threats and xenophobic rhetoric from prominent Republican figures and online activists.

Prominent conservatives have launched coordinated attacks targeting Mamdani’s Muslim faith, immigrant background, and progressive politics.

Mamdani has received multiple death threats, prompting increased security and investigations by the NYPD’s hate crimes taskforce. The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) noted the volume of xenophobic posts as “noteworthy,” highlighting the persistence of Islamophobic tropes targeting Muslim politicians since 9/11.

Mamdani expressed the personal toll of the attacks, emphasizing his commitment to creating an inclusive, affordable city. He condemned the fear these attacks instill in Muslim New Yorkers, stating, “This is not the way that we can have our city be.”
