UN report accuses India of failing to protect Muslims
……………
A UN report has criticized Indian authorities for failing to protect the Muslim minority following widespread violence after an attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir. UN Special Rapporteur on minority issues, Professor Nicolas Levrat, told the U.S. Congress that India has not upheld its international obligations to safeguard minority rights. He warned of a troubling rise in sectarian violence and racial discrimination, suggesting official complicity.
Rights groups documented 184 hate incidents against Muslims within two weeks of the Pahalgam attack, spanning 19 Indian states. These included mob assaults, targeted killings, mosque demolitions, and public hate speech — all amid official silence and alleged support from influential figures.
The report highlights a growing shift in India from a multicultural image to a climate of hostility against Muslims, particularly in Jammu and Kashmir, where the violence revealed deep-rooted sectarian tensions and a lack of accountability from the state.
