Syria Faces Ongoing Violence, Security Chaos Six Months After Assad’s Fall

Since Bashar al-Assad’s fall in December 2024, Syria has seen over 7,670 deaths, mostly civilians, amid continued violence and widespread insecurity, Rudaw revealed citing a report by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR).

The UK-based monitor documented more than 2,130 extrajudicial and identity-based killings, with a sharp rise in March violence, especially in Alawite-majority coastal regions. Civilians made up 75.4% of fatalities, while non-civilian combatants, including government forces, opposition groups, and Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, also suffered heavy losses.

Interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa, appointed in January, has been criticized for exclusionary governance. Recently, his government’s plan to integrate 3,500 foreign fighters—mainly Uyghurs—into the Syrian army sparked concern among various Syrian factions. SOHR emphasized the need for justice, international law enforcement, disarmament, and awareness campaigns to restore peace and stability in Syria.
