Record Number of Americans Applying for UK Residency Amid Political Climate

In the 12 months leading to March 2025, over 6,600 US citizens applied for British citizenship or indefinite residency—the highest since records began in 2004, The Guardian reported.

More than 1,900 applications were submitted between January and March 2025, coinciding with the start of Donald Trump’s second presidency.

This surge occurs despite the UK Labour government’s efforts to reduce immigration, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasizing border control. Net migration to the UK fell nearly 50% in 2024 compared to 2023.

US immigration lawyers report increased inquiries, attributing the rise to the polarized political environment in the US under Trump. Many seek dual citizenship or relocation options amid uncertainty. However, most settlement applications are through family or spousal links.

Changes in UK settlement rules—extending qualification from five to ten years—may also influence application trends, though the government plans provisions to expedite settlement for contributors and raise English language requirements.
