Singapore Doctor Fined S$10,000 for Anti-Muslim Social Media Posts

85-year-old Dr. Kho Kwang Po was fined S$10,000 (US$7,700) on Monday for reposting offensive remarks against Muslims on Facebook, CNA reported. The Singaporean doctor, whose medical license expired in 2020, had initially posted the content in 2016 and republished it in 2021 despite a prior conditional warning. Two police reports were filed in June 2021, citing his “racist and seditious” posts denigrating Islam over several years.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Sean Teh noted Dr. Kho’s deliberate intent, as his public profile amplified the posts’ reach. While the offense could warrant imprisonment, prosecutors considered his age, guilty plea, and the posts’ limited traction. Dr. Kho’s lawyers acknowledged his remorse and unlikely recidivism.
District Judge Eddy Tham condemned the remarks as “objectively insulting,” emphasizing Dr. Kho’s responsibility as a former medical professional. The judge accepted mitigation arguments but imposed the maximum fine under the Magistrates’ Courts. The charge carries a penalty of up to three years’ jail, a fine, or both.
