Bangladesh suspends Awami League’s registration amid ongoing war crimes probe

Bangladesh’s Election Commission has suspended the registration of the Awami League, the country’s long-dominant political party, effectively barring it from contesting upcoming elections, the INDEPENDENT reported. The move follows a recent decision by the interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus to ban all activities of the party, citing national security concerns and a war crimes investigation.

The Awami League, formerly led by ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, is under scrutiny for alleged involvement in the deaths of protesters during mass demonstrations that led to her government’s collapse last year. Hasina, who remains in exile in India, faces over 100 criminal charges related to the unrest.

Authorities say the party’s suspension will remain in effect until the International Crimes Tribunal concludes its proceedings against senior leaders. The ban extends to all party activities, including rallies, publications, media appearances, and online engagement.

Saturday’s mass protests in Dhaka, led by groups that supported last year’s uprising, intensified calls for a formal ban on the Awami League. Officials argue the restrictions aim to protect witnesses and ensure national security.

Meanwhile, former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia has returned from medical treatment abroad, fueling renewed calls for elections. However, interim leader Yunus has indicated polls may be delayed until late 2025 or early 2026.
