UN Urges Immediate Ceasefire as Civilian Toll Rises in Ukraine

The United Nations warned on Tuesday about the escalating humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, urging urgent international support and an immediate ceasefire as attacks on civilians and infrastructure intensify, Anadolu Agency reported. UN Political Affairs chief Rosemary DiCarlo told the Security Council that recent efforts to bring parties to negotiations offer hope for peace, but relentless attacks continue to cause widespread destruction.

According to the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), at least 151 civilians were killed and 697 injured in April alone, surpassing March’s already elevated figures. The Russo-Ukrainian War has been ongoing since February 24, 2022, marking over 3 years of bloody battles and damage on urban as well as infrastructure.

UN Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Joyce Msuya highlighted worsening conditions, with missile and drone strikes damaging homes, schools, and hospitals. She noted a 12% increase in birth complications caused by blackouts and medicine shortages, leaving many pregnant women without essential care.

Nearly 13 million people in Ukraine require humanitarian aid, including vulnerable groups such as women, children, the elderly, and disabled individuals. The UN urged the Security Council to increase financial support and prioritize civilian protection in all peace efforts.
