Syrian Opposition Flag Raised at UN Headquarters Amid Political Transition

The new Syrian flag, symbolizing the opposition-led government, was raised at the United Nations headquarters on Friday, Rudaw reported. The ceremony, attended by Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani and UN envoy Geir Pedersen, marked a diplomatic milestone for the rebel-backed administration that replaced Bashar al-Assad’s regime in December 2024.
Shaibani hailed the move as reinforcing Syria’s global standing, while Pedersen commended Syrians’ resilience during the transition. The flag—green, white, and black with three red stars—was adopted by the interim government, which faces scrutiny over inclusivity. President Ahmed al-Sharaa, appointed in January, pledged diversity in governance but has drawn criticism for marginalizing minorities.
Western nations, including Germany and France, cautiously engage with Damascus, linking sanctions relief to broader political representation. The U.S. recently downgraded the Syrian UN mission’s visa status, reflecting ongoing tensions. Pedersen urged “more political inclusion and economic action” to stabilize the transition.
