UNESCO recognizes Iraq’s historic Hajj route as global geopark

UNESCO has added Iraq’s historic Hajj route, known as Darb Zubayda, to its Global Geoparks Network, recognizing it as one of 16 new sites of geological, environmental, and cultural importance.

Stretching from Kufa to Mecca, the centuries-old route is rich in archaeological landmarks, including ancient wells, water reservoirs, and the Faydh Oasis, once a vital rest stop for pilgrims.

The route also features desert hunting traps and the archaeological village of Taba, reflecting the deep interaction between people and their environment. UNESCO praised the site’s unique blend of cultural heritage and geological layers, highlighting its potential for research, education, and sustainable tourism.
