UN: Iraq hosts over 300,000 refugees amid funding shortfall

Iraq is home to 338,138 registered refugees and asylum seekers, with 90% being Syrians, according to a UNHCR report. The majority (85%) live in Kurdistan, while 15% are in central and southern Iraq, mainly Baghdad, Kirkuk, and Nineveh.

The report highlights Iraq’s ongoing displacement crisis, with over one million internally displaced persons (IDPs), including 109,000 still in 21 Kurdistan camps. About 27% of refugees live in camps, while 73% are in host communities, increasing pressure on public services.

Refugee returns to Syria dropped in 2025, with only 2,749 repatriations in 2024, due to security concerns in northeastern Syria. Meanwhile, a $158.5 million funding gap threatens UNHCR’s aid efforts, as only 8% of the required funds have been secured.

The agency provided cash aid to 56,000 vulnerable refugees, enrolled 55,000 Syrian children in Kurdistan schools, and opened six new schools. With increasing challenges, UNHCR urges international support to ensure sustainable solutions for refugees and IDPs.
