Heat Wave Forces School Closures in Manila

A severe heat wave has prompted the closure of schools in nearly half of the Philippine capital, Manila, affecting over 2.8 million students, Arab News reported. Local officials announced the decision as soaring temperatures marked the start of the torrid dry season in the region.
The national weather service issued a warning that the heat index—a combination of air temperature and humidity—could reach “danger” levels, leading to potential heat cramps and exhaustion. Although temperatures were forecasted to hit 33°C (91.4°F) on Monday, local governments preemptively closed classrooms to protect students.
In Malabon district alone, more than 68,000 students across 42 schools were affected. Schools in Valenzuela district shifted to alternative learning models, including online classes. This situation follows a similar heat wave last year, which led to frequent class suspensions. The ongoing climate crisis, driven by human activities, continues to disrupt education, with UNICEF reporting that extreme weather affected 242 million children globally in 2024.
