EU’s AI Act Promotes Digital Sovereignty

The EU’s Artificial Intelligence Act aims to establish a comprehensive legal framework for AI, reducing dependence on non-European tech giants while promoting ethical standards, Anadolu Agency reported. Adonis Bogris, a professor at the University of West Attica, emphasizes that this legislation seeks to differentiate EU-developed AI from that of the US and China, ensuring compliance with European values.

The Act introduces stringent requirements, including mandatory risk assessments and human oversight, addressing ethical concerns over biases in high-risk AI applications in sectors like healthcare and finance. Bogris highlights the importance of transparency and user understanding, while also advocating for the inclusion of trade unions in shaping the Act to protect workers’ rights.

Additionally, he points out the environmental impact of AI and the need for eco-friendly technologies. As the EU navigates geopolitical pressures, Bogris calls for a strategic digital development plan to enhance sovereignty and leadership in AI and other key technologies.
