Karnataka Federation Threatens Contempt Action Over Hijab Ban in Exams

The Karnataka State Minority Educational Institutions Management Federation has warned the state government of potential contempt action if Muslim girls wearing hijabs are barred from examination centers, Clarion reported. Federation president Advocate CR Mohammed Imtiaz pointed out that the Karnataka High Court had previously quashed a government circular prohibiting hijabs in exams.
Imtiaz criticized Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa’s recent remarks about maintaining the ban, stating they were legally incorrect. He emphasized that the government cannot make further decisions on the matter due to ongoing legal proceedings.

The federation noted that the ban does not apply to minority educational institutions, citing a court ruling from February 22, 2022, which protects these institutions under Article 30(1) of the Constitution. Imtiaz called for directives to ensure Muslim female students can take exams in hijabs and warned of legal action if the government fails to comply with the court’s order. The federation has also reached out to senior officials, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, regarding the issue.
