Three Women Arrested for Distributing Quran in Srinagar, Released After Questioning

Three women were detained by police in Rajbagh for distributing copies of the Holy Quran ahead of Ramzan, Free Press Kashmir reported. The incident raised concerns among local leaders, including PDP MLA Waheed Para, who described the detention as unjust. Para later confirmed that the women were safe and had been questioned briefly due to identity concerns.
He urged authorities to avoid unnecessary legal actions against the women, emphasizing that the Quran promotes justice and a crime-free society.
Kashmir-based activist Dr. Raja Muzaffar Bhat condemned the detention, labeling it a serious violation of international law and the United Nations Charter, which safeguards religious freedom. Bhat highlighted that the Quran advocates for justice, suggesting that the women’s peaceful religious activities should not be met with such scrutiny. The incident has sparked discussions about the importance of protecting religious freedoms in the region.
