Muslims in Spain’s Catalonia play key role in economic and cultural prosperity

Muslims now make up over 8% of Catalonia’s population, playing a key role in the region’s economic and cultural landscape. According to the Islamic Commission of Spain, Catalonia is home to 617,000 Muslims, the highest concentration in Spain, surpassing even Andalusia during its Islamic peak.

With 27% of Spain’s Muslim population residing in Catalonia, the community is a vital part of the region’s workforce and social fabric. The majority hold Spanish citizenship, with Moroccans forming the largest group, followed by Pakistanis.

Demographically, Muslim families contribute to a younger workforce, with higher birth rates compared to native populations. Despite concerns over demographic shifts, Muslims in Catalonia are a model of successful integration, enriching the region through their contributions to the economy, culture, and education.
