Iraq’s top court dismisses appeal against three key laws

Iraq’s Federal Supreme Court has dismissed an appeal challenging the validity of the voting procedures for three recently passed laws: amendments to the general amnesty and personal status laws, as well as a land restitution bill.

The ruling effectively lifts the temporary suspension imposed last week after several lawmakers contested the voting process in parliament. With the court’s decision, the implementation of the laws will now proceed.

According to legal experts, the general amnesty law, a major concern for Sunni communities, revises the definition of affiliation with terrorist organizations, which some hope will lead to the release of individuals they believe were unjustly imprisoned.

The land restitution law, backed by Kurdish and Turkmen groups, aims to return properties confiscated under the Baath regime to their original owners. Meanwhile, amendments to the personal status law, which governs marriage, divorce, and inheritance, have sparked debate, with critics warning it could undermine women’s rights.
