Aid group calls for halt to expulsion of Afghan refugees over dire conditions

A global humanitarian agency warns against expelling Afghan refugees, citing dire conditions in Afghanistan amid ongoing humanitarian crises.

The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) has urged Afghanistan’s neighboring countries to halt the expulsion of millions of Afghan refugees, citing the country’s unpreparedness due to decades of conflict, economic devastation, and climate challenges, VOA reported. According to the article, Iran plans to expel up to 2 million Afghan refugees by March, while Pakistan has already deported at least 800,000 since October 2023.

NRC Secretary-General Jan Egeland highlighted the plight of vulnerable returnees, stating that many Afghans returning from Iran face an uncertain future marked by unemployment, hunger, and human rights violations. The NRC noted that returnees often struggle to find work or housing, with many lacking family connections after years in exile.

Egeland emphasized the dwindling international aid, which is essential for addressing the immense humanitarian needs in Afghanistan. He pointed out that women and girls are disproportionately affected by the shortfall in support for non-governmental organizations and humanitarian assistance.

The Taliban’s restrictions on women’s access to education and public life further complicate humanitarian efforts. Egeland called for increased global support and urged the Taliban to create an enabling environment for humanitarian work. Pakistan defended its policy of deporting Afghan refugees, stating that those sent back were residing illegally. The situation remains critical, with many Afghans still seeking refuge from potential retaliation.
