US Supreme Court Affirms Law Prohibiting TikTok
The US Supreme Court has unanimously upheld a law requiring TikTok’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to sell the app or face a ban by Sunday, citing national security concerns, Al Jazeera reported.
The court ruled that the law, passed by a bipartisan majority and signed by President Biden, does not violate First Amendment protections.
The justices acknowledged TikTok’s role as a platform for expression but emphasized the necessity of addressing valid security issues related to data collection practices. TikTok plans to cease US operations if a last-minute reprieve is not granted.
In a statement, TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew thanked Trump for his commitment to finding a solution to keep the app operational. With around 170 million American users, TikTok’s future remains uncertain as the transition of power approaches. Without a formal delay from the Biden administration, TikTok could face significant operational challenges, impacting its users and business partners.
