Iraqi calligraphers showcase Quranic art at Baghdad Exhibition

An exhibition dedicated to the calligraphy of the Holy Quran opened yesterday in Baghdad, at the Ministry of Culture. Featuring top Iraqi calligraphers, including one female artist, each participant contributed by inscribing a section of the Quran. The event, supported by the Ministry of Culture and the Ibn al-Bawwab Foundation for Islamic Arts, marks the 15th edition of the annual exhibit.

Fadhil al-Badrani, Deputy Minister of Culture, emphasized the exhibition’s prestige, highlighting the participation of seasoned calligraphers and a rigorous selection of younger talents. Ali al-Jubouri, one of the participants, expressed pride in his contribution, noting the use of high-quality Japanese ink and metal pens, which emulate traditional tools.

Maysun Hassan, the sole female calligrapher, spent two months completing the 22nd part of the Quran, describing the initial challenge of working on such a sacred text. The exhibition celebrates Iraq’s rich heritage of Quranic calligraphy and aims to elevate the nation’s artistic contributions to Islamic culture.
