Muslim Women Candidates Surge in Local Elections in US

As the U.S. presidential election approaches, Teaneck, New Jersey, is witnessing a significant political shift with two Muslim women, Reshma Khan and Nadia Hussain, running for local office, VOA reported yesterday.

Teaneck, home to a diverse population of 41,000, has never had a Muslim woman on its city council. Khan, an activist of Indian origin, aims to inspire future generations, while Hussain seeks to become the first Muslim woman on the local school board.

Following the historic elections of Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib in 2018, the number of Muslim elected officials has risen to over 235, with expectations to surpass 250 this year. Local races, including city councils and school boards, are crucial for representation, as Khan emphasizes the importance of local elections in addressing community needs.
