300 prisoners in Bahrain remain in detention despite given royal pardon, rights group says

The Gulf Centre for Human Rights reported that around 300 prisoners in Bahrain remain in detention despite being included in a royal pardon, which released over 1,000 inmates.

The pardon, issued in June and September 2024, did not include prominent human rights defenders like Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja, who is in critical health, or Dr. Abduljalil Al-Singace, on hunger strike since July 2021.

The centre urged Bahraini authorities to expedite the release of political prisoners and human rights advocates, and highlighted challenges faced by those released under alternative sentencing programs, such as difficulties with housing and employment.
