Deadly Bombing Targets Chinese Nationals in Karachi, Claims Two Lives

A late-night bombing outside Karachi’s largest airport targeted a convoy of Chinese nationals, resulting in the deaths of two Chinese workers and injuries to eight others, including police officers, the Associated Press reported yesterday.

The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) claimed responsibility for the attack, describing it as a suicide bombing. The incident raises concerns about Pakistan’s ability to secure high-profile events and foreign nationals, especially with the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit.

The Chinese Embassy confirmed that the victims were employees of the Port Qasim Electric Power Company, a joint venture with Pakistan. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the attack, labeling the perpetrators as “enemies of Pakistan” and pledging a thorough investigation. The BLA, designated a terrorist organization by Pakistan and the U.S., has approximately 3,000 fighters and has increasingly targeted Chinese nationals amid ongoing tensions in Balochistan, where separatist sentiments and violence persist.
