Microsoft to Reopen Three Mile Island Nuclear Plant for AI Energy Needs

Microsoft and Constellation Energy announced a historic agreement on September 21 to reopen the partially-melted-down Three Mile Island nuclear plant, Xinhua reported yesterday.

This marks the first time a decommissioned U.S. nuclear facility will be revived, with Microsoft purchasing all generated electricity for 20 years.

The plant, expected to restart by 2028 at a cost of $1.6 billion, will provide 835 megawatts of power—enough for around 800,000 homes. Despite the potential economic benefits, including an estimated 3,400 jobs, the plan faces regulatory hurdles and public skepticism, particularly regarding safety inspections by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Critics have raised concerns about the use of federal subsidies benefiting a single company. While some community leaders support the initiative, nuclear safety advocates warn about the risks associated with reopening the notorious facility.
