UN Experts Urge Global Cooperation on AI Governance

Ahead of the “Summit of the Future,” UN experts have warned that the development of artificial intelligence (AI) should not be driven solely by market forces, Dawn reported today.

The panel, formed by Secretary General Antonio Guterres, highlights a global governance deficit, with only seven of 193 member states involved in major AI initiatives, leaving many developing nations excluded from critical discussions.

Guterres emphasized that AI must serve humanity equitably, warning of potential threats to democracy and stability if left unchecked. The experts recommend establishing a scientific panel on AI, similar to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), to assess risks and research needs.

These proposals are part of the draft Global Digital Compact, which aims to foster international collaboration on digital technologies.
