UK Schools Remove LGBT Books Following Parental Complaints
A recent survey reveals that half of school librarians in the UK have received requests to remove books containing LGBT content, primarily from parents, Euro News reported today.
Conducted by the organization “Censorship Index,” the study involved 53 librarians and found that 28 (53%) reported such requests.
Some librarians shared that after a parent’s complaint about a specific book, they were instructed to eliminate all LGBT-themed titles. Some reported that when they discreetly provided LGBT books to students, parents attempted to have them expelled from school.
It should be mentioned that parental complaints about LGBT books and curriculum have been on the rise, with parents in Canada staging a massive demonstration last year in protest to governmental push for inclusion of such themes in education system for children.
