Afghanistan Launches New Polio Vaccination Campaign
The Afghanistan Polio-Free Organization has initiated a new polio vaccination campaign today, urging citizens to contribute to a “Polio-Free Afghanistan,” Khaama Press reported yesterday.
The campaign, which will last for four days, aims to vaccinate 4.2 million children under five in provinces including Herat, Uruzgan, Helmand, Kandahar, Zabul, and Nimroz.
Despite progress, Afghanistan remains one of only two countries where polio has not been eradicated, alongside Pakistan. In 2023, six polio cases were reported in Afghanistan, highlighting ongoing challenges such as access to remote areas, conflict, and public awareness.
The Ministry of Public Health has emphasized the need for collaboration between local communities and international organizations to ensure the success of vaccination efforts. As the campaign unfolds, sustained efforts and continued international support will be vital in achieving the goal of a polio-free Afghanistan.
