Drone Attack on Rohingya Fleeing Myanmar Claims Dozens of Lives

A tragic drone attack last Monday targeted Rohingya families attempting to flee Myanmar, resulting in numerous casualties, including women and children, Reuters reported yesterday. Witnesses reported that survivors wandered through piles of bodies near the border with Bangladesh, struggling to identify their deceased relatives.

The attack occurred as families waited to cross into Bangladesh, with estimates of fatalities ranging from 70 to over 200. Witnesses attributed the assault to the Arakan Army, a claim the group denied, while both the militia and Myanmar’s military blamed each other for the violence.

Videos shared on social media depicted the horrific aftermath, with bodies scattered across the muddy ground.

The situation worsened as boats carrying fleeing Rohingya capsized in the Naf River, leading to additional deaths.

The Rohingya, a persecuted Muslim minority in predominantly Buddhist Myanmar, have faced violence for years, with over 730,000 fleeing the country since a military crackdown in 2017.
