Imam Hussein’s Flag of 210 Meters Marches from Faw to Karbala
On the path of pilgrims in Basra, a young man from Safwan continues a remarkable annual tradition by carrying one of the largest flags commemorating Imam Hussein, which adorns the route from Ra’s al-Bisha in Faw to the Shrine of the revered Imam. Having started this journey at the age of seven, Mustafa Salem, now 23, has dedicated sixteen years to ensuring the flag remains raised, thwarting the efforts of those who oppose the Imam.
In an interview with Shia Waves Agency, Salem shared that the current flag measures an impressive 210 meters in length, with a width of 20 meters and a height of 10.5 meters. He began with a smaller flag in 2008, when he was just seven years old, carrying it alongside his father from Najaf to Karbala. Over the years, the size of the flag has gradually increased to reach the current size, which was carried for 328 kilometers from Dhi Qar province to Karbala.
Salem explained that his team, which now includes 24 dedicated servants of Hussein, strives to expand the flag’s dimensions each year. This year, they added five meters, bringing it to its current length of 210 meters. Salem personally raises the flag with the assistance of seven friends who manage the “brake pads” mechanisms to maintain balance. Additionally, 14 helpers alternate in holding the ropes of the ” brake pads” to stabilize the load while walking. The process of raising the flag involves lowering and wrapping it in areas with checkpoints and in response to strong winds and heavy rain.
Salem stated, “The purpose of this long journey is to support Imam Hussein, as his enemies continually seek to lower the flag of truth and raise the flag of falsehood. However, that will never happen. The lovers of Hussein around the world are willing to sacrifice everything to uphold the cause of Hussein.”
