Pakistan: 55 Dead, 145 Injured in Punjab Monsoon Chaos
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) of Pakistan’s Punjab reported that 55 people have died and 145 others injured due to rain-related incidents, including building collapses and lightning strikes, during the ongoing monsoon season in the province, Dawn online newspaper reported.
With more heavy rains expected over the next two days, the PDMA has warned of potential flooding in areas connected to the Chenab and Ravi rivers. Recent rainfall measurements included 43mm in Rawalpindi and 21mm in Sialkot.
PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia stated that all preparations are in place to address flood risks, urging residents to adhere to safety guidelines. Financial assistance has been provided to families affected by the recent tragedies.
Relief efforts are underway in low-lying areas, where eight boats and 34 rescue workers are assisting those displaced by flooding. Fortunately, timely evacuations have prevented loss of life in the submerged villages of Dera Ghazi Khan and surrounding areas.
Authorities say relief activities will continue till evacuation and rehabilitation of all flood-hit people, ensure protection of their life and property.
