Heavy Rainfall in Delhi and Northern India Claims 11 Lives, Hundreds Rescued

Torrential rainfall in northern India has resulted in at least 12 fatalities and widespread damage, prompting emergency rescues of nearly 1,000 individuals stranded in the Himalayas, Reuters reported yesterday.

The capital, Delhi, recorded 147 mm (5.8 inches) of rain late Wednesday, with local media reporting seven deaths in the city.

In Uttarakhand, three additional fatalities were reported due to a cloudburst that washed away parts of two bridges, complicating rescue efforts. Officials confirmed that over 1,000 people were saved from various locations along the Kedarnath trek, as a section of the national highway was also damaged.

In Himachal Pradesh, two deaths were reported, with nearly 50 individuals missing due to flooding. District officials described the situation as dire, with ongoing efforts to recover bodies from debris.

Experts have linked the extreme weather to climate change, as India continues to face severe rainfall and flooding incidents.
