Discrimination Against Muslim Women in Nigeria Highlighted at NASFAT Conference

Dr. Ganiyat Tijani-Adenle, a lecturer at Lagos State University, addressed the growing discrimination faced by Muslim women in Nigeria during her keynote speech at the 8th biennial women’s conference of NASFAT in Abeokuta, Punch online news reported yesterday.

She emphasized the marginalization of Muslim women in education, employment, and politics, particularly highlighting restrictions on wearing hijabs in various institutions. Tijani-Adenle criticized the unfairness faced by Muslim women in professional settings, noting instances where qualified candidates are denied jobs due to their hijab.

Meanwhile, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, the Deputy Governor of Ogun State, reiterated the government’s commitment to combating women’s marginalization through empowerment programs.

The conference aims to enhance women’s leadership and capacity building, featuring workshops and community service activities. Over 1,000 participants are expected, with opportunities for virtual attendance, all focused on fostering a more inclusive society.
