Bangladesh Students Protest Job Quota System
Thousands of Bangladeshi university students staged protests across the country, demanding an end to quotas for government jobs, VOA reported yesterday.
They argue the quotas, which include reserving positions for children of independence fighters, are discriminatory and favor certain groups. The students are calling for a merit-based system for civil service jobs.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has defended the quotas, saying they are necessary to ensure social justice. The government previously abolished the quotas in 2018 after student protests, but they were reinstated by a court ruling in June.
