ICESCO set to issue Islamic World Charter on Artificial Intelligence

The Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) intends to issue the Islamic World Charter on Artificial Intelligence.

This announcement was made in a statement released by ICESCO on Tuesday during the launch of the regional workshop for the Islamic World Charter on Artificial Intelligence for the Asia and Middle East regions, held in Muscat, Oman.

The workshop is being organized by ICESCO in partnership with the University of Technology and Applied Sciences in Muscat and the Omani Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology.

According to the statement, ICESCO’s Director-General, Salim bin Mohammed Al-Malik, highlighted that the global artificial intelligence market is growing at a rate of 33% annually. By 2030, AI is expected to drive global economic growth by 14% and the AI market size is projected to grow by at least 120% year-on-year.

Al-Malik noted that the organization places significant importance on artificial intelligence, as reflected in its comprehensive foresight strategy, especially concerning strategic governance and ethical dimensions.

This emphasis led member states to task ICESCO’s General Administration with preparing the Islamic World Charter on Artificial Intelligence, although no specific timeline has been provided.

Additionally, ICESCO’s Director of the Center for Foresight and Artificial Intelligence, Kais Hammami, stated that the charter represents a milestone towards a prosperous and sustainable technological future for the Islamic world.
