The United Nations has urged for increased global efforts to safeguard the Danube River, which traverses 14 countries and benefits 79 million people living along its shores, from the adverse effects of climate change and pollution.
In a statement from Vienna, the UN announced that to mark the 20th anniversary of the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River, various international organizations will join this year’s Danube Day celebrations, which will include a range of activities along the river’s banks.
The statement emphasized the crucial importance of the Danube River and its tributaries in providing water, food, energy, recreation, and livelihoods to people in the region.
