Scorching Heatwave in India Kills Over 100, Brings 40,000 Suspected Heatstroke Cases

A relentless heatwave scorching India for over three months has claimed over 100 lives, according to health ministry data.

The brutal heat has also resulted in a staggering 40,000 suspected heatstroke cases reported since March 1st.

The northern state of Uttar Pradesh has borne the brunt of the heatwave, with 36 confirmed deaths. Delhi, the capital, also sweltered under extreme temperatures, briefly experiencing its hottest night in over five decades.

While some relief is expected in the coming days, weather officials warn the heatwave could persist.

Last year, more than 150 people died in India during heat waves.

India, the world’s most populous country and one of the world’s largest emitters of planet-heating gases, is among the most vulnerable to climate impacts.
