Measles Outbreak Prompts School Closures in Nigeria’s Adamawa State
Authorities in Nigeria’s Adamawa State have ordered the closure of all public and private schools for one week due to a measles outbreak, Anadolu Agency reported yesterday.
According to the state’s Ministry of Education, the closure was necessary “to mitigate the spread of the disease, and to enable the Primary Health Care Agency to vaccinate the age group of children that are vulnerable.”
The move comes after at least 42 people, mostly children, died from the viral outbreak last week across two local government areas. The government has warned that the airborne disease could spread further throughout the state.
Students are expected to return to school on May 13 for the third stage of the 2024 academic session.
