The head of the European Union’s mission in Yemen, Antonia CalvoPiorta, called for an immediate end to the war and a political settlement through negotiations.
She congratulated Yemeni women on the occasion of International Women’s Day, which she said comes as Yemenis suffer from the ongoing war, which is close to its fourth year. Women have paid a heavy price in all walks of life because they are most affected by the war they described as devastating.
“The scale of the suffering of all Yemenis by the war is indescribable and unfortunately the focus on women and their rights has been largely neglected,” Piorta said in a statement.
She affirmed EU support for UN efforts to end the conflict in Yemen through a negotiated political solution that includes women’s participation and empowerment.
She concluded by saying that the humanitarian situation in Yemen calls for a halt attacking the citizens. “For that, the war must stop now,” she added.
