War, climate change displaced unprecedented number of people worldwide

According to a report published in Reuters, the number of internally displaced people worldwide reached a record number of 71.1 million as of last year.

The figures put conflict-driven displacements at 28.3 million, with war in Ukraine alone forcing 17 million out of their homes.

The report adds that natural disasters such as floods, droughts and landslides have caused a total of 32.6 million individuals to leave their residence.

The Geneva-based Internal Displacement Monitoring Center (IDMC) said the figure represented a 20 percent increase from 2021.

Almost three-quarters of the world’s refugees live in 10 countries, including Syria, Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ukraine and Sudan.
