UN: Yemen is on the verge of a major hunger crisis
The Executive Director of the World Food Program, David Beasley, warned that Yemen is on the verge of a major hunger crisis.
Beasley warned of a bleak scenario, in the midst of continuous cutbacks, the program is forced to put it on its humanitarian aid directed to millions of people in need in Yemen, due to the funding shortage crisis that the United Nations relief agency suffers from.
This crisis resulted from a lack of donations on the one hand, in addition to the consequences of the Ukrainian crisis, represented by the problems that hit supply chains worldwide, high inflation rates and shipping and transportation costs on the other hand, in addition to the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Yemen itself.
This led the World Food Program to reduce the rations it provides to about 13 million people at risk of hunger in Yemen, reducing the size of its support provided to 5 million of them, by more than 50%, and decreasing by almost 75% for the other eight million.
